Why your hand goes to the volume mid-podcast
The host is loud, the guest is quiet, and you turn it up and down the whole drive. Where that gap comes from, and why even good editing usually leaves it.

A podcast app for iPhone
The host is loud, the guest answers quietly, and on a drive that means a hand on the knob every few minutes. LevelCast evens them out while the episode plays, on the phone itself.
Each was recorded on a different microphone in a different room, and sometimes the guest is on a remote call. So every voice reaches the episode at its own level.
So you turn it down, and a minute later you turn it up again. A whole episode goes by like that, one hand on the wheel and one on the knob.
The quiet voice comes up and the loud one comes down a little while the episode plays. All the processing happens on your phone.
The episode sounds like two people sitting in the same room, and both hands stay on the wheel.
The demo
The same minute of a Hebrew podcast, once as it is and once after levelling. Switch between the versions right as the guest starts talking.
And the overall level actually went up. Before levelling it was -20.7 dBFS, and after it -18.1 dBFS. So the gap closed without the episode getting quieter.
What else is inside
The app spots where the intro music ends and offers to jump straight to the conversation.
When one person talks slowly and the other rushes, the slow one is sped up a little and the fast one slowed down, so a single speed works for both.
Hold the back button on your steering wheel to save what was just said, along with a transcript. You send it later, once you've stopped.
The episode is transcribed while it plays, and you can search it for a word. This works on devices that support speech recognition in the episode's language.
Episodes download in the background, so you can keep listening when there's no signal.
When time runs out the sound fades slowly instead of cutting off mid-sentence.
No server in the middle
The app finds the episode in the producer's open feed and plays it straight from their server, and the processing happens on your phone. There's no account to open and no server holding copies of episodes.
How it worksLevelCast is a podcast app for iPhone, in Hebrew and English. It finds shows in Apple's podcast directory, and you can also paste in a feed address by hand.
